Chronic Pain? Acute Strains or Sprains? Numbness and Tingling?
People's Integrative Medicine offers clinicians who are highly trained and specialized in treating various types of pain conditions. Their training ranges from trauma & orthopedics, sports injury, to internal and functional medicine. We are skilled and experienced at addressing chronic pain, acute traumas, repetitive sprain and strain, and systemic conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, and rheumatism. Our acupuncturists use various modalities in the treatment of pain such as myofascial trigger point needling or “dry needling”, electro-acupuncture, ear acupuncture, cupping, massage, guasha, functional nutrition, and herbs.
Electro-acupuncture has become increasingly popular over the last 20 years. Although the effects of acupuncture are still not fully understood, research has made some significant headway. Research has shown a strong correlation between electro-acupuncture and anti-inflammatory effects, the increase of blood and lymphatic flow, and analgesic effects through the release of opioid endorphins and serotonin. It is suggested that electro-acupuncture may also be linked to the up-regulation of cell metabolism and tissue repair and facilitate neuro-muscular stimulation and re-education.
“Dry needling” is essentially acupuncture but is a term used by PTs, Chiropractors, and MDs who have not been trained in Chinese medical principles and needling techniques. Most of the “dry needling” technique courses are a 16-hour weekend class for non-acupuncturists. An acupuncturist who has received over 3,000 hours of clinical training knows about Chinese medical theory and needling techniques.
“Dry Needling” is a specific needling technique that is based on neuroanatomy and myofascial trigger point therapy that is used with thin filiform needles without the injection of a solution. Myofascial pain is often associated with trigger points that may present with a painful and fibrotic tight band. In response to needling this trigger point, the patient may experience referred pain and/or a twitch response. There is strong scientific evidence in the effectiveness of using trigger point needling technique to treat musculoskeletal pain and neuromuscular dysfunction.
Auriculotherapy (Ear Acupuncture)- The ear contains branches from multiple cranial nerves including the vagus, vestibulocochlear, and facial nerves providing direct access to pathways of the peripheral nervous system. TCM theory of aruiculotherapy is based on a microsystem that correlates to the entire body including musculoskeletal and anatomical regions, internal organs and organ systems, endocrine systems, and the central and peripheral nervous systems. By stimulating specific points on the ear and the correlating cranial nerve, we can successfully address various conditions including but not limited to pain, digestive disorders, mood disorders, respiratory conditions, and gynecological disorders. The popularity of ear acupuncture is most known for its ability to assist in weight loss and addiction. The NADA protocol is used to assist individuals suffering from drug and alcohol addiction and detox.
