To see how effective acupuncture is in alleviating acute and chronic pain, all you have to do is ask around. Professional athletes, cancer survivors, the elderly and recently injured will all tell you that, given a chance, acupuncture can really change pain patterns in a positive way.
How does it work, you ask?
Good question! There have been thousands of studies worldwide sales performed to answer that very question. Here are some of the highlights-
Acupuncture has an inherent anti-inflammatory effect on targeted tissues. This action alone will help anyone suffering from sports injury, spinal surgery, arthritis- basically anything you would take an Advil for, acupuncture will help.
02 Pain Relief
Considerable evidence illustrates that opioid peptides, which play a key role in pain sensation, (think endorphins) are released during acupuncture, which accounts for at least part of acupuncture’s analgesic effect.
Lack of blood flow accounts for a variety of disease states. Take muscle tissue, for example. When a muscle gets contracted, there is less blood flowing through it- this contraction and lack of fresh blood and oxygen both contribute to pain. It is well established that acupuncture increases circulation, eliminating the contracture, and relieving muscular tension and pain.
How safe is it?
If you receive acupuncture from a licensed acupuncture physician, it is a safe, drug-free therapy with no harmful side effects. Licensed acupuncturists in the state of California are required to do Pre-Med undergraduate classes before attending a 4-5 year Master’s program. They must then pass rigorous state board exams, consisting of conventional medical information on anatomy, physiology and pharmaceuticals, as well as Chinese modalities including acupuncture, nutrition, herbal therapies and massage.
